Splendid Sampler

The Splendid Sampler™ 2 – Sunbonnet Me to You

Quilts are a craft of love … they provide warmth, comfort and memories …

The most uplifting thing about quilting is when we make a quilt for someone else. It may be someone we know or a complete stranger, the grateful or the ungrateful, the ‘thanks for the beautiful quilt’ or ‘nice rug’ people. Regardless, it is what is in our hearts when we make it and the humility of giving our gift with unconditional terms.

When designing this block I wanted to include the iconic Sunbonnet Sue. I love how her hat is bigger than her head, much like when our children start school and their hats are way too big for their heads so they can grow into them.

Read about Bertha Corbett Melcher – the talent behind the Sunbonnet Babies.

I love needle turn appliqué because it adds dimension to a block (and I really like hand sewing). The technique I use is shown here for my pineapple block. The small pieces are a challenge but with patience and using a smaller seam allowance for turning over the pieces, you can master the tiniest pieces.

Giveaway

Today, I will be giving away these beautiful scissors from @warm_crochet. I love these elegant ( and very sharp ) scissors.

To enter, tell me about your scissors stash – do you have a favourite? Do you name your scissors? Has anyone used your sewing shears for cutting paper?

My dad came to America from Germany. Always purchased high quality items. He bought me a pair of sewing scissors! ❤️

  • Paula Strickland

I have a lot of scissors. Different sizes and different uses. My family has been warned and they ask before using any of them. Thanks for the fun block. Will be doing mine machine applique since I do not do hand applique.

  • Marion Knights

I have more than a dozen scissors, from very small to fabrics cutters (from my Mother). I am constantly looking for and buying sharpers scissors, especially for my embroidery.

  • Gretchen

I do love scissors! I have my Grandmas scissors. I keep a ribbon on them so that everyone knows not to use them for anything other then fabric.

  • Patricia Best Creel

My scissors are all chain-store quality, but my sister needlepointed a case for me which I cherish!

  • Mary Simpson

I have a “scissor stash” of 3 fabric pairs, 2 embroidery, and 1 that stays in the kitchen for every day and other uses. My favorite scissors are the ones my late grandmother used to sew her grandchildren’s clothes and to teach me how to sew. They are burnished with all the love Grandma used to put into her sewing. I keep this pair hidden so no one in my family can “accidentally “ borrow them. I also have an oversized pair that hang on a wall in my sewing room for inspiration. These scissors from Warm Crochet are simply beautiful! Thank you for the chance to win a pair.

  • Patricia

I have many small scissors stashed i various project bags, My favorite pair was given to me by my DD and are the Eiffel
Tower a memento of her year in Paris on exchange

  • carolyn

My scissor stash is not terribly extensive. I have Gingher shears and clippers that my mother gave me 20 years ago that I cherish, but they badly need to be sharpened. I have some short Fiskars scissors that I use for applique, a pair of Dovo scissors that I LOVE for the brushed feel of them and a tiny pair of scissors that I was given as a gift when I worked at a quilt shop that are just so pretty. I love them all. Yes, my Gingher shears were used by my kids to cut paper, but each kid only did it once! They learned not to do it again very quickly!

  • Shaina M

Yes, I have a small scissor stash that I like to hoard. Occasionally, I like to pull them out just to pet them. So far, everyone in this holdhold knows to leave my scissors be.

  • Carol

I love these scissors! The more elegant the better! I only have a few pairs of different scissors – a few for fabric cutting, pinking sheers (at least 40 years old and hard to use), fine curved points for machine embroidery, to cheaper smaller scissors for whatever item I may be working on. Yes, although I know I shouldn’t, almost all have been used on paper.

  • Barbara Mead

I have lots of scissors. The ones I like the best I hide from the family because for some reason those boys think they can use what ever is on my sewing table. My scisorrs have been used for cutting food,( even thought I have a pair of scissors for that purpose) cutting hoses in the car for some repair they want to do, and you all get the picture.

  • Glennis Salls

I do love scissors. I have a few pair of old scissors and pinking shears that belong to people I have loved. Sometimes I am drawn to scissors in an antique store or thrift store. I have a new pair of embroidery scissors that are shaped like a bird. I love them. I do need to find a way to sharpen them. Yes the evil paper cutting. I did once cut through a paper pattern and fabric to cut out a pattern. It was a dilemma. What do I do!

  • Lora Horsley

I have way to many scissors but love them all. I hide them since I found out my family was using them to cut paper. Weird huh?

  • Lucy Blum

I have a variety of scissors! My tip is to have “paper” scissors available in several locations around the house – that prevents people from grabbing my fabric scissors to open packages and cut paper!!

  • maria elena blecha

Oh heart be still!!!! Those are lovely. I have about 5 prs of scissors, sometimes I do call them names!!! Thanks for the opportunity!!

  • Tamara Gassen

I love scissors. I like to go to vintage shops, flea markets etc. I favorite find was a vintahe button hole scissors. Have a great day!

  • Pam Shallenberger

i have several scissors but am very particular about my quilting ones. my obsession is my fav color is purple so when i see this color i try to get them. crazy i know lol

  • Linda Jerome

I love my scissors, everyone in my family knows not to touch them, I keep paper scissors in the kitchen drawer for them to use on whatever they are working on, usually cutting a coupon. My favorite scissors are by gingher but I also have a small Kai scissor that is nice and sharp. I would love to win a scissor you are giving because the designs is so unique, I have only basic scissor.s

    • Carol H

I love those small Kari scissors too. I have quite a few scissors but they each have a specific spot and purpose. Since just my kitty can’t use scissors, they are safe. Paper and utility scissors are clearly marked and my kitchen shears are in plain sight in the countertop knife block.

  • Patty Adams

What beautiful scissors! I love scissors and have quite a few pairs, but none as beautiful as the ones you are giving away. Just my husband and I at home now, but he knows to leave my sewing scissors alone. I hope I am one of the lucky winners!

  • Mary Jane Ellinger

I only have a few scissors and I would love to win that cute pair! I don’t name them but my favorite is a gingher .

  • Sue W

I have a set of scissors for embroidery. I love them
But they are not pretty like the Warm scissor
I would be so happy to have a pair and maybe in
Time add a pair or two!

  • Beth T.

I grew up hearing, “Don’t use my sewing scissors for cutting paper!” and thought that was kind of fussy. Now I’m the one handing down that dictum, and boy, do I mean it. Not fussy at all, no sir. I do have a favorite pair of scissors, a tiny pair of stork scissors that was given to me by my mom, long ago, and will never replace them. I have other scissors that I keep handy, but these scissors are tucked away in a safe place and only come out when I’m working on projects, and then get put away promptly when I’m done. I’d be crushed if I lost them–although when we had kittens, they snuck off with the little leather case that held the scissors, and I survived. (Six years later and I still haven’t found the secret hiding place for the case, and sooooo many other things.)

  • Karen Burton

I have scissors of all brands and varieties. When my stepfather died, we found a big box of scissors in his mini-storage,and one pair of those is now my favorite. He was a doctor so these are some type of medical scissors by V. Mueller – Germany Stainless.

  • MoeWest

I don’t think of my scissors as a stash but I could probably gather up a doxen pair in my sewing room. A ‘loved one’ did use my fabric scissors for paper once, before proper re-training! I love Sunbonnet Sew with a quilt! Thanks for the chance to win such pretty scissors.

  • Leslie Robb

I have a nice collection of scissors now. None of them are really expensive but they were gifts from special people in my life or were my mother’s. My first pair of snipers were given to me when I was 13 years old. They were a gift from my 4 H leader. She is one of the reasons I studied textiles in University.

  • Dawn Tenneson

I have basic scissors. Fiskars garment and pinking , set of Design tool Kits(gifted to me), paper scissors. Quite a few small assorted scissors for cutting yarn for crochet and knitting. My prize scissors are my Ginghers- smallest one they make-had them for years and they are still very sharp. But they are my fanciest.

  • Jane Mara

I have many pairs of “regular” scissors but nothing as beautiful as these gorgeous scissors!! Most of my smaller scissors have that identifiable orange handle. Through the years, I’ve had to be pretty creative in order to hide them from my family or else they are used to cut everything from paper to wire. So, I hide my sharpest pair under the sink by the dish soap and the dishwasher packets! No one has ever found them there! I would love to put a pair of these scissors under my sink when I’m not using them!!’

  • LINDA FICKLING

My favourite scissors are my suture removal ones i used from nearly 50 years ago as a registered nurse

  • Dixie McAdam

Being a retired Home Ec. teacher, now quilter- embellisher, I must admit I have many pairs of scissors of all purposes as well as sizes. My favorite pair for quilting type sewing are Fiskars & my go-to pair for garment sewing are Stretch ‘n Sew. My family members, based on past experiences as well as labelling, are well aware of the difference between moms’ sewing/crafting scissors versus ones they can use. Oldest daughter now well knows SHARP means sharp – not paper scissors, nor crayon cutters, but unfortunately finger. The scissors in your giveaway are absolutely gorgeous. If fortunate to win, these would be gifted to my older sister, who loves hand work of all kinds. Many thanks for this opportunity. Love your quilt inspiration that you so willing share with all of us.

  • Jacquelynn Tucker

I have 4 different sizes of Ginghers- mostly for sewing, a number of different scissors for embroidery, my latest buy is Karen Kay Buckley’s all three sizes. I also have a pair of KAI scissors. counting all the others I have around 20 pair of scissors, some are for paper crafting. My favorite pair Is Karen Kay Buckleys smallest pair , they are the best for cutting out small applique pieces.

  • Rena Christensen

I love scissors too! I still have my very first pair of sewing shears given to me by my mother 53 years ago. I no longer use them for fabric but I trim paper with them, i know, sad. I inherited many snips and small scissors from my Mom and have sifted through all of them. I still get a quickening heart when I see a pair of beautiful scissors. I have passed on to my three daughters the respect of good fabric scissors so none of them have ever used my sewing scissors for cutting paper that I ever knew about. Cant claim the same for their father though! My stash includes many types of scissors and shears along with rotary cutters. So many beautiful ones yet to purchase!

  • Lynn Geisler

I have many pairs of scissors, but my favourite us my Ginger left-handed sewing scissors. Of all of my collection, they are the only left-handed ones I have. All others so far do not offer it. Great Pattern!

  • Elrid Johnson

I think I have a scissors fetish as I periodically need to have a new one. I have several from my mother but my current favorite is a unicorn design. I have a friend whose advice was to hide your scissors in your underwear drawer to keep them safe.

  • Jacque

I am something of a collector of scissors – specifically the Gingher designer series – but just the small embroidery scissors. I love them all! And actually do use them to cut paper – they’re so nice and sharp that it doesn’t seem to dull the blades at all. But these scissors you’re giving away are so elegant – I would love to own a pair!

  • Eleanor K Hunzinger

My go to scissors are a pair of Karen Buckley embroidery scissors with serrated edges! I love them even above my fingers which are nice. I love how the serrated edges pull the fabric of thread in rather than pushing it away from you when cutting. Kay H

  • Ruth

I have my mother’s scissors marked with a ribbon so she would know which ones were hers at quilt guild. Also keep little pairs s of scissors handy all over my sewing room for easy access. Nice giveaway!

  • Linda

I kinda collect old scissors. Meaning I have 5 that are old. The scissors you are showing are beautiful! My child never touched my sharp shears as he learned that he cannot not touch any scissor that I tied a ribbon on the handle. I made sure he had is own to cut paper with.

  • Janice Hope

I have a few lovely pairs of scissors that were my Mum’s – her good Wiss sewing scissors that she used when she was a dressmaking teacher, as well as a set of 3 antique scissors in graduating sizes. There is even her buttonhole scissors with the cut out in the blade for different size buttonholes. I have a nice little pair of embroidery scissors that live in my sewing kit that travels with me. I accidentally forgot to pack them in my checked in luggage when flying from Sydney to Tasmania. When the security man found them in my carry on he commented that I probably wouldn’t want to lose them, so he very kindly offered to send my backpack as checked luggage. It was so good of him.

  • Judy Lawrance

I have a drawer full of scissors! I somehow am attracted to scissors and purchase many! Many of mine are sharp and ready to use
For lots of purposes! I rarely “let go” of my scissors as there is always a use for them— even the dull ones! Not only donI have my great sewing collection, I also use scissors in the kitchen! Kitchen scissors great for cuttin up chicken breasts and other things too! When they get dull, I use them in the yard on some of my plants forfor snipping off faded blooms!
A pair of scissors I WISH I had would be the little black scissors my Mama used— somehow, they disappeared when she died!
But she made all our clothes and always had those precious little sharp black scissors at hand to clip threads and rip out mistakes!!!

  • Diane Steiger

My Favorite scissor is the one the family hasn’t found “yet”so it’s still sharp ……….

  • Linda Fleming

I keep separate scissors for paper cutting – no one is allowed to use my fabrics scissors for paper.

  • Kathie L

My Gingher scissors are my favorites. So sharp. I also have a pair of snips beside my sewing machine.

  • Sally Christiansen

I have many small scissors and keep them all over the house so they are handy where ever I am. I never let anyone cut paper with my sewing scissors and every one knows not to!

  • Wilma Kinder

I have several pairs of scissors, but one of my favorites is a pair of Wiss I got in middle School in 1963.

  • Donna

I use my “fabric” scissors for paper related to sewing and quilting. Pattern paper and copy paper. There is nothing wrong with doing so. I understand sometimes you have to say no paper when there are a house full of kids. I have several small appliqué scissors along with dressmaker scissors. Mainly to have them when I need them where I am liking visiting family. Happy Quilting.

  • Linda Sapp

I’m a leftie so scissors are very special to me. My father bought and gave me my first ones many, many years ago. Since I am a leftie and my husband is a leftie, we can share the scissors but not my fabric ones. We do have ones for paper and all three children in our family know “don’t touch Mom’s shears” I even have a pair of pinking shears which often come in handy. But I love the little scissors for when I do hand stitching or counted cross stitch. Your Red Bronze scissors are lovely and owning a pair would be my delight. Thank you for the opportunity to win.

  • Noreen

I actually collect scissors! There are some beautiful ones out there. I don’t let anyone else use them & I have them displayed in my studio. I do use them, but don’t have a favorite.

  • Ms Sam Nicholson

When my Mom died I inherited her tiny scissors, I LOVE THEM!!! I also received her quilting books, cloth, everything . Like her, I started quilting by hand using her books and patterns. I still have some of her quilts to finish, which I will some day.

  • elizabeth porter

I have a lot of pairs of scissors, but my favorite are my embroidery scissors. They are
    Ginger brand of scissors.

  • Julie Beard

I don’t really have a scissor stash! I know that’s quite unbelievable in my crafting world. I have never until recently realised how important scissors are until you lose your favourite pair. I unfortunately in my haste recently, I used my scissors on let say some foil type product causing some damaged to the blade. They are now unusable my favourites! Too replace will be a costly adventure but worth it in the end. My scissors are an important extension of my hands in my crafting world and without my essential tools, I am lost. I do love those beautifully designed scissors and have the perfect use for them in my embroidery basket.

  • Barbara Beernink

Yes I have a favorite scissors and I guard it with my life!!! Would you believe I dropped my favorite little scissors? I still like them but not as much since I messed up the tip!! Ugh!!! I have several scissors but only a couple favorites because I like how they handle, how they feel in my hand AND how they cut!! I like a little weight with my scissors but a nice sharp cut is important. I have several cute little scissors but they don’t cut worth a hoot! All looks and no snip!!!

  • Rita Hays

I have many scissors and shears, in my sewing room and each of my portable project totes, but when I see a new or unique scissors, it goes right on my wish list!

  • Dee

I hide my favorite sewing scissors underneath lots of scrap fabric pieces and other quilting items, gloves and even small cutting mat! I leave scissors for others to use in other drawers and they DO use them without asking, I have seen them! Ha. Good scissors are special and so helpful when you need a SHARP pair for clipping seams or delicate sewing.

  • Karen Seitz

I have loads of scissors, mostly embroidery scissors, but other styles too. I have collected antique scissors. Those I don’t use — I just love to look at the beautiful workmanship that went into them. My favorite pair is an art deco style from Dovo which I do not think are made anymore. Those never leave my house for fear of losing them.

  • Carmen N

I own several different brands and kinds of scissors but usually use the same few pair. The beauties you have today would be great just sitting there looking pretty. One can never have too many!

  • Jennie Dunn

I only have 2 pairs of cheap fabric scissors, but my favourite are snips that came free with some garden seeds!! I am researching scissors to purchase as people who have made the investment always seem to say it’s worth it in the long run. I’m thinking of some Karen K Buckley small scissors and a pair of large Kai ones. I have 2 very special scissors that my husband inherited, one pair look ornate like the ones in the giveaway, the other are inscribed as my husbands grandfather was mayor and used these to cut the ribbon on a new food hall back in the 60’s. Not only do they have family history, but are great paper cutters (not so good on fabric).

  • Marilyn Menzies

Although I have many different kinds of scissors, the one pair I use the most are the ones I use to snip threads when I am using my sewing maachine. They are spring loaded so they are easy on my hands.

  • Bobbie Campbell

The worst has been by my son- he must have been 10 or so and my brand new Gingher ‘s were what he chose to cut his bike innertube (and he never confessed whatever else)!!!!!
It was in the days that I had to save (read pinch pennies) just to buy tham.

  • Patricia McDaniel

I love my scissors, and treat them like gold..and they never, ever touch paper. They will never cross to the dark side.

  • Judi Harlond

I have lots of scissors and am VERY particular about how they are used and everyone in the family knows this so no my good scissors are never used for paper.

  • Gwen Hanvy

You can never have too many scissors. My current favorite is Karen Kay Buckley. I should name them I name most every thing else.

  • Carol Gouveia

My favorite scissors is a very small embroidery scissor that a shop I worked for long ago gave me as a Christmas gift. I don’t think there is a brand on them. I never thought about naming my scissors but I have named my sewing machines. I have 3 sons, so that goes without saying that they have cut paper along with a lot of other things with my scissors. I probably should have put a lock on them.

  • Darlene

    Beautiful scissors!
I really do not know how many pair of scissors I have, I just know I have many different varieties. DO use them for cutting paper? Yes, at times I do, but Shhh!
When I’m being lazy, which isn’t very often I will grab a small pair to cut pattern pieces if a pair of paper scissors aren’t within reach. I might use them to cut paper piecing pieces, or an applique pattern, but that is all.
I love my duck bill scissors and my embroidery scissors the best. I have a problem throwing out scissors that are dull or need to be sharpened.

  • Christine Deering

Fun!i have duo many scissors i can’t name then all. I lovesmall embroidery scissors. And u cherish a large pair of shears that belonged to my beloved grandfather who was an upholsterer.

  • Noeline Morton

<3 They are the cutest little Scissors . .they look Antique while being New. . Remind me of my Nanna's Sewing Box with her tiny embroidery Scissors.
    Central Coast, NSW Australia. .

  • Christi

I am crazy in love with my Kai scissors. No one touches those. I leave Fiskars all over the house for everyone to use so they leave mine alone. Best method I found was to hide them in a drawer.

  • Carmen Goldstein

I have many pairs of scissors in all shapes and sizes. You can never have enough. They stay in my workroom so no one cuts paper with them

  • Carol Kussart

Hoo boy, I have a lot of scissors! Paper scissors are in one place, mine in another. I don’t think anyone has used my sewing scissors to cut paper–my husband and daughters learned about that early on. 🙂 A favorite pair?? Probably my Fiskars spring action ones with padded handles–they are easy on my arthritic thumbs. Those warm crochet scissors are gorgeous! Might have to get a pair to add to my collection. 🙂

  • Theresa Kotsmith

I have a small bucket of scissors but two favorites! My scissors don’t get used on paper by me, but some family members have used them for paper. My husband once used them to open a super glue bottle, not too happy about that one!

  • Michele Bender

I have a small group of scissors, Gingher, Kai, and Karen Kay Buckley. They are sharp and efficient for me. Sadly, though, nothing so elegant and decorative as these Warm Crochet beauties!

  • Shelley Kelley

I had two different pair of sewing scissors early in our marriage. One was ruined when hubby used it to cut paper and then lineoleum tiles! The second pair was ruined when he decided to cut cardboard. It did not matter that I had utility scissors just for odd projects or rather especially for anything that would ruin a good pair of sewing scissors. He just did not understand the difference or that once used for some projects they would be forever ruined for material.
He lived through both episodes – but just barely. For many years I did not know anyone else who had dealt with the same scissor trauma. Then I started hearing from other sewists of their encounters with scissors bandits. Seems everyone has had it happen to them at least once.
I now have several pairs of scissors which I keep in mint conditon now. The secret? I keep them hidden from him -always! Married 48 years and proof some secrets are not only great to have but necessary. I do not have any antic scissors since he ruined my only pair first.. The scissors you are giving as a prize are beautiful.

  • Ellen Kremer

I love scissors! I have many pair for many purposes, but my favorite is a little pair of embroidery scissors I have had for many years. They are not as sharp as they used to be, so I will need to get them sharped. When I quilt I have scissors at the machine, one on the ironing table and another on the cutting table, everywhere really because I lay them down and am always looking for them! Same as my glasses! I would love to win this beautiful scissors and would treasure them. Thanks

  • Toni Crane

I seem to have scissors everywhere; shears, pinking shears, snips, embroidery scissors….but my favorite are the dressmaking Gin0gher Shears my mother gave me many years ago. They look new, hold their edge and seem to have evaded the my children’s quest for cutting paper and everything else. My pinking shears need to be replaced soon. Always admired Sun Bonnet Sue but had never made one until now….how cute!

  • Debra Ingle

I have several pairs of scissors , all of them I like, but I have a pair of gingher little 4″ scissors that I love to use for all my Applique trim, hardanger and any other small work. these are my go too scissors. I do not name my scissors. My granddaughters has used my sewing scissors only once for paper and believe me they have NEVER touched my scissors of any kind for anything. I love these little scissors your giving away.. would love to be the proud owner of them, they might become my next favorites. Thank you for the giveaway and the chance to win, my birthday is the 10th it would make a great birthday present to win.

  • Carrie Anderson

Embroidery is my great love next to quilting – especially applique.

My favourite scissors came from my young step-daughter Pipa. She called them “borking scissors”. Even all her uncles and aunts backed her up as they are a family joke.
This is apparently the sound that Pinking Shears make as they cut material across their mother/grandmothers table. “BORK BORK !!” So funny and delightful.

Your delicate beautiful scissors would never make a noise like that. How would you describe it?

  • Carrie Anderson

HELP me please. I am not finding the link to the Sunbonnet Sue block. Can handle scissors well but the computer? that is a good challenge.

  • Sherry Wheeler

I love collecting and scissors are great to collect! I have the ones for all my needs: quilting, appliqué, sewing, crochet and knitting. My favorite pair belonged to my mother who passed away many years ago. I keep them as a treasure and when I use them I remember her and that she loved sewing and embroidery, something that she passed on to me. I don’t usually name my scissors but I often think of where they came from and when I bought them when I use them. The scissors you are giving away would be a great addition to my collection and I would treasure them as well as use them too!

  • Pat Roof

Hi Jane, thanks for all your work designing this amazing book! I do not have a scissors collection and I really do need some good ones. I have to hide what I do have from hubby so he doesn’t grab the wrong pair for opening his bags of pellets..ugh.

  • Donna

My large pair of sewing scissors are 48 years old and still working wonderfully. But I do not have any lovely scissors . . .mine are all pretty utilitarian looking.

  • Helen L

I have many scissors: the large ones for dressmaking, and different small ones for carrying around hand work projects, and to have next to my sewing machine for snipping threads. You can never have too many!! The most amazing scissors that I’ve ever seen were at Road to California few weeks ago: there were several AMAZING pairs of small scissors in a glass topped wooden display case at the Bohin booth. I mentioned that they were works of art, and the gentleman (with a french accent) agreed with me and asked me if I wanted to see them closer. I declined when I heard the price (about $500.00)! But they were sure beautiful!!! 🙂 Thanks for hosting the give-away. I have the book and need to make some blocks for it. Your sunbonnett Sue block is sure cute: It would be great for my sister who loves Sunbonnet Sue.

  • Janet Crossman

I have a collection, well not really, but lots of scissors. I love my Karen Buckley & Fiskars scissors the best, but, also have some scissors that used to be included in medical trays for post surgery needs. This was before all the throwaway things of today. thanks

  • Wronda Lamando

I have several pairs. One pair of Fiskars that I use for cutting paper for EPP or FP, one pair of Fiskars for fabric cutting, one pair of Gingher for my fussy cutting, and two pair of smaller Gingher’s for embroidering and cutting thread at my Bro station.

  • Mary Simpson

My scissor stash includes 3 pairs for fabric, 1 giant-sized pair adorning my sewing room, and 2 pairs for embroidery and quilting classes. But my favorite pair is the one my late grandmother used the times she taught my sister and me how to sew. That pair is safely packed away in my sewing box.
