Spool block
The Aurifil Designer BOM for 2014 is coming to an end and all 12 blocks have been published. To finish my quilt I set the 12 blocks on point and added this spool block to the centre. The final on-point lay out will be published at a later date.
Hint: The final lay out is an on-point design so if you are using this block, position the embroidered centre in the correct position.
The block unfinished is 16 1/2″ x 16 1/2″ using a combination of appliqué and embroidery.
In the free pattern I have used the fusible appliqué technique but for those that prefer needle turn or EPP the supplied templates are adaptable by adding a seam allowance.
The embroidery was stitched with Aurifil 12 wt cotton thread. The wonderful thing about this weight thread is that unlike floss, you don’t have to separate strands. Aurifil also supplies the floss wound on beautiful wooden spools. For a finer look, use 28 wt cotton. The 12wt, 28wt and floss all come in 270 colours.
The pattern can be found here.

I can't wait to see this one all done and together. I'm hoping they're going to run another BOM in 2015 as I'd like to have a go at it. Figure it'll be a good skills builder. Hope you had a fabulous Christmas! <3

I like your layout a lot. What a great way to set 12 blocks, by creating a special block for the very center.
