Liberty Gift Box Ornament
Yesterday, while I was tinkering in my studio, I decided to put my Liberty scraps to good use and make a English Paper Pieced ornament that also doubles as a tiny gift box. The little 2″ sided box could house a chocolate, jewellery, or a silver thimble for your quilty friend. Of course, this design is not restricted to 2″. Any side could be made from equilateral triangle shapes.
Requirements
- Find some scraps, at least 2 1/2″ to 3″ square. You will need 4 for outside and 4 for inside
- 8 – 2″ sided 60 degree diamond EPP papers. Light card stock is recommended
- Fabric glue pen
- Matching fine thread for EPP
- Button
- 12 wt Aurifil cotton or fine ribbon, perle cotton to hang ornament
Preparation
- Trace the 2″ sided 60 degree diamond shape on back of Liberty scraps.
- Cut 1/4″ around drawn shape.
- Baste or glue the 8 triangles – 4 for outside and 4 for inside.
- Whip stitch 4 triangles together to make outside and 4 to make inside.
Pyramid Assembly
- Whip stitch 4 triangles together to make outside and 4 to make inside.
- Sew button near tip of outside pyramid.
- Place the outside and inside pyramids wrong sides together and whipstitch together.
- Fold up the sides A and B and secure tip with a few stitches of matching thread.
- Attach a long loop of cotton or ribbon to tip of A and B. This wraps around the button and then loop fits over tree branch.
Enjoy the spirit of Christmas and make someone happy with a handcrafted gift made with a heap of love.
