Flock Wave

I was so excited when Thomas Knauer sent me two of his recent fabric collections to make a quilt – Flock and Savanna Bop. Using Flock, I have made a children’s quilt, aptly named ‘Flock Wave’ because I used a curved block based on Jennifer Lanak’s ‘Roller Coaster‘ block. Wishing to alter the slope a smidgen, I drew my own in EQ7 and inverted alternate blocks to make a wavy effect. 

Block Size 6″ finished. Quilt Size 48 1/2″ x 60 1/2″

Adhering to my ‘White Rule’, I searched for a suitable background solid to complement the fabrics. Being inquisitive and willing to try anything, I found a spandex 4% / cotton 96% blend fabric at Spotlight ( on my twice yearly visit ).

While it has the weight of a home dec fabric, it was the nicest fabric to sew and quilt with. I had no trouble at all on the long arm or the domestic machine. I even used an iron set just below cotton to press the fabric and it did not scorch the fibres. This blend came in some gorgeous colours, 54″ wide and has a beautiful lustre, changing shade, depending on the light and how it was cut. At $AUS 12.99 / metre not a bad buy.

For the backing I pieced together some Flock FQ’s and one of my favourite solids from Kate Spains Flurry range in blue.
