Hidden Snowflake Block – FREE
Christmas is one of my favourite times of the year. I can hardly wait to put up the tree, decorate the house and bake. I know festive etiquette rules state that Christmas decorating is not allowed before December 1st but being the rebel I am, Christmassy things start appearing in my house from Nov 1.
For those that show constraint, it doesn’t count for making Christmas projects. In the craft and quilting world, festive quilts, runners, gifts and pillows can be made all year round in ready for December. While dreaming of Christmas I designed the Hidden Snowflake block.
Living in a hot climate I never see snowflakes so, I thought it would be a fun block to make. The block finishes at 24″ and the large block makes a perfect size for a pillow, table runner or quilt.
I named the block, Hidden Snowflake, as it starts out like this …..
and with some slicing and dicing becomes this block ……….
You can download the FREE pattern here.
The block was made with Michael Miller’s Fairy Frost.
The pillow backing is a print from Jason Yenter (In the Beginning fabrics) Australian Beauties.
I used the beautiful Aurifil variegated thread in light blues, 50wt cotton #3770 for quilting.
I love to see my photos of your projects made with my patterns, so tag your masterpieces with #hiddensnowflakeblock #quiltjane.

Wow!! Thank you. I never would have guessed how the block was put together. I have some Fairy Frost hidden away, just waiting for a project like this.

I’m with you on christmas decorations – they need to be out so we can enjoy them !! I figure if they’re in the shops then they’re ok at home too 🙂 such a fabulous pillow and a fun way we can enjoy snowflakes down under !

I am making your hidden snowflake block right now and really enjoying it. I have found one small error in the cutting instructions. The center small square needs to be cut at 2 inches rather than 1.5. I will post on Instagram with a link to you, after I have given it as a gift to a friend.

Thank you Susan for picking up the mistake. I will amend the pattern and repost it to the blog. I am looking forward to seeing your hidden snowflake.
