Hexagons always distract me
I bought some packs of the new Moda Hexagons – Honeycombs – from the Fat Quarter Shop in Robins Egg, Brown and Natural. I had two spare Odds and Ends charm packs so I decided to start a baby quilt for a friend this weekend.
Using the traditional grandma’s garden layout, I alternated the path colours in the 3 solids and added an appliquéd petal to each flower (set of 6 hexagons). I have three more flowers and paths to make and then machine sew them together.
Do you like the EPP ( English Paper Piecing ) method of making hexagon quilts, bags and runners or do you prefer to machine sew?

What a pretty idea! Can't wait to see it finished!

I have done both, I like EPP for its portablility but machine sewing is obviously quicker! Your project is looking lovely!

I'm slowly working away on 2" EPP hexagons (diameter) as a side projects which will most likely become a quilt. So yeah, after 462 hexies and 52 finished flowers and 14 more prepped I must like doing them or it'd be very painful. I haven't yet tried machine sewing hexies.

I do enjoy EPP though the process is slow. I am currently working on a EPP star quilt and loving the journey with it though it may be months or years till I make enough stars to make a decent quilt.

Very pretty! I haven't played with hexagons yet – but think I would more enjoy machine piecing. Can't wait to see your baby quilt finished!

I just learned EPP a few months ago & really enjoy it. Hand sewing is my favorite thing to do.

Playing with AHHH's ( EPP hexies from HillbillyHandiworks) I must enjoy hand sewing! I also have a calloused finger to prove it. Love the baby quilt.

Looks wonderful! The applique petals add sew much to the design. I have not worked enough with hexagons to offer an informed opinion. I shall look forward to watching this quilt in progress. Thanks for sharing … 🙂 Pat
GO STARS!
Machine sewing is definitely faster and lots of fun, but hand-sewing is very relaxing and portable. A place and time for both!

Oh what a sweet baby blanket you are making!
I have only ever sewn hexagons by hand (epp)
and recently used a half hexie rule by Lori Holt
which was a whole lot of fun! :o)

There is something of had piecing or paper piecing, as it is very relaxing. When the hexagons are big like Moda's I do prefer machine piecing it.

I much prefer the English paper piecing method, though my stitches are too visible for my taste–so I try to use neutral or matching threads.
