The Desperate Housewife’s Quilt – Week 43 Three Leaves

Welcome to week 43 of the ‘The Desperate Housewife’s Quilt’. Todays block is about Applique. Remember, this is not a quilt-a-long. Just follow the blog every week and pick and choose which blocks you would like to make. I will be injecting some uniqueness into traditional blocks, applique, three dimensional, crazy and thread-art blocks. If you make a block please post it on the Flickr group for everyone to enjoy. Also, I have this nifty button under each post that allows you to save the post as a PDF.
Be sure to visit this week’s Guest Blogger and their wonderful block.
(N.B Due to the differences in time and date zones, the guest blogger’s block may not appear at the time of the initial posting)

This week I have the very creative and talented designer – Toni Alexander from The Red Boot Quilt Company. A fellow Aussie and local, Toni is presenting her Recycled Denim Daisy block.
Three Leaves
The wind lifts the leaves from the Gum Trees and tossing them around the yard, resting in gutters, paths and pools.
  • 1  – 8 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ background square
  • Favourite Fusible web or Freezer Paper ( Use something that is soft or can be washed out. Needle turn would be the preferred method if making a whole quilt ).
  • Scraps for leaves
  • Print out the Applique Templates here
  • Trace onto dull side of fusible web ( without 1/4″ seam allowance )
  • Cut out leaving 1/8″ around shape
  • Iron onto back of fabric.
  • Cut on traced line
  • Using a cooler iron, press onto background square using the diagram below as a reference to placement of the leaves. Remember to place the edge of the leaves 1/4″ inside the block.
Hint: If making multiple blocks, create a template that you can lay over the 8 1/2″ block to position the appliqué pieces. Alternatively cut a paper square 8 1/2″ x 8 1/2″, draw the leaves and use this as a template with quilters carbon paper to mark each block.

  • Applique leaves to background fabric using your favourite stitch
Hint: If you are using needle turn appliqué remember to add 1/4″ seam allowance when cutting the leaf shape.

So simple and yet so amazing when used for a full quilt! I really like the look of the alternating blocks. Definitely going to be filing this in the inspiration pile for future use after making it for The Desperate Housewife's Quilt!
