The Desperate Housewife’s Quilt – Block 4 Bar-jello

Jul 21, 2011 by quiltjane 3 Comments

Welcome to week 4 of the ‘The Desperate Housewife’s Quilt’. Todays block is simple and relaxing and all about using up your scraps. Remember, this is not a quilt-a-long. Just follow the blog every week and pick and choose which blocks you would like to make. I will be injecting some uniqueness into traditional blocks, applique, three dimensional, crazy and thread-art blocks. If you make a block you can post it on the Flickr group for everyone to enjoy. Also, I have this nifty button under each post that allows you to save the post as a PDF.
My guest blogger this week is  Deanna. Deanna has made a beautiful, dazzling star.
Barg-Jello
It’s wavy, colourful and wobbly at the same time.
Techniques explored
  • Accuracy in cutting
  • Accuracy in piecing
Material
Dive into your scrap bag and find pieces from 1.5″ to 3″ square. I used a grey linen for the background pieces.

I was lucky enough to have a Jinny Beyer 6″ charm pack in my stash.

Making the block

Cut the fabrics according the measurements in the layout below and arrange the pieces ready for sewing.
Please note that the top and bottom 1.5″ squares in row 5 are the same dark fabric. This will be part of a feature if this block is used to make a whole quilt.

Sew the rows first then sew the completed rows together.

Remember to match the seams as shown below.

Arrows indicate matching seams
Unfinished block 8.5″ x 8.5″

Let’s see what magic we can create playing with this block.

Hope you enjoyed this weeks block. Easy wasn’t it? Next week I have some applique in store for you. Joining me next week will be Aunt Pami
