The Oakshott ColourShott BlogHop

Lynne from Lilysquilts and Oakshott are hosting the OakShott Colourshott Blog hop where 8 bloggers have been given the new 10″ square packs colours 31-50 and some yardage to complete a project and write a tutorial to share.
I asked them to chose the background colour for me and received purple so I decided to use a design that I have been toying with for awhile based on a 6-patch trip around the world block. It reminds me of a tiled floor with a folk art feel about it.

Folk Tile

  • 1 rust. Cut 4 – 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ squares.

Applique Preparation

To start with I used the charm pack to do the flower appliqué pieces and continued using the left over pieces from the 10″ squares. I used the red tone scraps for the circles.
  1. Make Templates A, B, C, D, E, F, and G
  2. Trace Template onto dull side of fusible web and cut out 1/8″ from pencil line.
  3. Following manufacturers instructions, shiny side down, press the shapes onto the back of each charm. (With careful planning you can fit a few petal shapes onto the one charm piece).
  4. Cut out each shape on pencil line and peel back paper backing and leave aside.
Make:
  • 4 – Template A (Large petal inside)
  • 4 – Template B (Large petal outside)
  • 64 – Template C (small petal)
  • 48 – Template D (medium petal)
  • 28 – Template E (1″ circle)
  • 24 – Template F (1 1/2″ circle)
  • 8 – Template G (2″ circle)
Download templates here. Do not scale or Fit to page.

Block Assembly

1. Make 4 – light blue and brown 4 – patch blocks
2. Make 20 – light toned 4-patch blocks.
3. Make 8 – purple and light purple toned 4 – patch blocks.
4. Lay out block pieces on a design wall.
5. Sew units together to make a row. Sew rows together. Press seams in opposite directions for each row.

6. Make 4.
7. Position flower petals on block and press.
8. Position circles on flower centres and 4-patch centres and press.
9. Applique flowers and circles to block using decorative stitch with matching or invisible thread.

Tip: Make sure you place the appliqué pieces 1/4″ from raw edge of block, especially for the large petals in the centre.

10. Arrange blocks on a design board. Rotate each block so the large petals meet at the centre to form one flower.
11.  Sew 2 blocks together to make one row. Sew rows together pressing seams open.

12. Layer quilt top, wadding and backing. Baste.
13. Quilt as desired.
14. Bind quilt, label and give it to someone you love.
Once you have mastered this simple appliquéd trip around the world, you can keep adding blocks to make a stunning bed quilt.
The quilt has been finished with Aurifil 2395 50wt cotton.
Make sure you visit these bloggers to marvel at their fantastic projects.
