The Desperate Housewife’s Quilt – Block 14 Venetian Blinds
Welcome to week 14 of the ‘The Desperate Housewife’s Quilt’. Todays block is all about adding ‘Peepers’ to give the block dimension. Remember, this is not a quilt-a-long. Just follow the blog every week and pick and choose which blocks you would like to make. I will be injecting some uniqueness into traditional blocks, applique, three dimensional, crazy and thread-art blocks. If you make a block please post it on the Flickr group for everyone to enjoy. Venetian Blinds
Two eyes peeping through the venetian blinds to see what’s going on in the big, wide world.
Techniques explored
- Adding peepers
Materials
- FQ of solid colour for background
- 12 x 1″ x 5″ scraps of fabrics
Cutting
- From the background fabric cut 20 – 1.5″ x 2.5″ rectangles and 4 – 1.5″ x 1.5″ squares.
- For the peepers cut 12 – 1″ x 3.5″ rectangles
- Press the 1″ x 3.5″ peepers in half lengthwise and press.
- Layout the block as shown in the image below. Remember to lay the peepers with the raw edge along the raw edge of the background pieces.
- Sew the peeper to the background piece ( 1.5″ x 3.5″) using a 1/8″ seam allowance. This stitch line must be less than 1/4″ or it will show when sewing the pieces together.
- Line up three peeper blocks. Sew them together. Repeat for the other three sets.
Play around with the sequence that the peeper blocks are sewn together. You may like the peepers all facing one direction or opposing directions.
- Sew the four sections together, rotating each one to form a pinwheel effect.
- Join the two(2) 3.5 x 1.5 background pieces together to make a 1.5″ x 6.5″ piece. Make two (2) Attach to top and bottom of block.
- Make two(2) more 1.5″ x 6.5″ pieces and add a 1.5″ square to both ends and attach to the sides.
If you do not want to introduce more colour and pattern variations into the block, cut 2 – 6.5″ x 1.5 and 2 – 8.5″ x 1.5″ strips of background and attach to block.
