Bird Song by Pat Sloan

My lovely friend, Pat has designed a new collection and I am so grateful Pat has asked me to be part of the tour.

Join me today to showcase Pat Sloan’s new collection Bird Song for Benartex ( @benartex_fabrics ). A delightful collection of birds, florals, dots and strips. Imagine a spring garden, heavily scented with colourful flowers alive with the chorus of birds reaping the bounties that nature provides.

The collection comes with panels to use as features in your quilts, pillows or bags.

Unfortunately, the carrier pigeons could not reach Australia to deliver me fabric so I used the magic of digital illustration (EQ8 and AI) to design a quilt. I named it, The seed stealers, after the birds that arrive every day to feed from my bird feeder. There is quite a hierarchy in place, and the small parrots are at the top of the pecking order. Those rainbow lorikeets are feisty, little creatures. (Stay tuned for the pattern release).

    My favorite birds are the cardinals that frequent the birdfeeder outside my sewing room window. They say cardinals are visitors from heaven when my beloved husband ascended to 3 years ago.

    We live in Oklahoma and our state bird is the scissortail fly catcher. We live in a rural area so we see lots of them along with several other types we love to watch them all.

    I think my favorite bird is the Blue Heron. There is one that visits the pond in my apartment complex occasionally. Such a majestic bird!

    My favorite bird is the Northern (rose breasted) Grosbeak but they are only in my area for about 4 months.

    My favorite bird is the Cardinal. The bright red makes are easy to spot, but usually I have to take take to look closer to spot the less colorful females. My parents had a bird feeder that made it fun to sit and watch them fly in and out. Your bird pattern is lovely. So sorry to hear that the carrier pigeons did not find your home. Maybe they will eventually.

    My favorite bird is the red cardinal. It was my grandmotherā€™s favorite. On the day of her funeral, her snowball bush outside her house was filled with cardinals. It was a bright, uplifting moment to a very sad day.

    Your Seed Stealers quilt is delightful, it reminds me of the flocks of birds returning in spring. Although there are many birds who brave out the winter here, it’s impossible to ignore the joy you feel when that first Red Winged Blackbird arrives & announces spring. How can you pick a favorite bird? They’re all so special in their own way.

    bird. He is a handsome fellow. I absolutely adore your example of the birds one fabrics in the bird quilt using the birdsong fabric. The bluebirds are especially cute. Iā€™ll have to look around and see if you have a pattern for it. You are the first person I am commenting to this week because I fell in love with the two tone bird quilt. Thanks for sharing.

    My favorite bird is the Black Capped Chickadee. We used to have this blue spruce outside our home and I would watch these little guys flit about!

    The seed stealers quilt is just lovely. My favorite bird in my yard is the little wren. They are just so plucky and seem to enjoy life. It would be amazing to have little parrots at my bird feeders!

    I have two favorite birds. One is the Eastern Bluebird, oh such a beautiful shade of blue and the other is a Chick a dee. There is a place not to far from me that allows you to hand eed them in the winter.

    Although Iā€™m from Texas and the robin is the state bird, my favorite bird has to be the hummingbird. I love how graceful it is as it hovers around looking for its food. Thank you for working with Pat Sloan and the opportunity to add to my stash!

    I love your seed stealers pattern, itā€™s just adorable! My favorite bird is the peach faced love bird. My daughter bought one when she was 12 she named him Filleet, he lived until he 17 (a long life for a love bird). Then Amari came into our lives, a masked love bird, unfortunately he only lived 7years. He was bought from an unscrupulous breeder (we didnā€™t know that at the time). We now have Ari, a lineolated parakeet, heā€™s beautiful, with black lines across his feathers with cobalt blue background.He is now 2 and quite spoiled rotten, but he deserves it! He climbs up on the arm of our eye glasses and travels around the house with us and gives us lots of love.

    My favorite bird has got to be a cardinal. They visit my yard all day long and have for 32 years. I am just now starting to put feed out for them, but the problem I am having is the squirrels like the same food.

    I love what you did with Patā€™s fabric line. My favorite bird is the simple Robin. There are many bird that are beautiful and note worthy. Where I live, the Robinā€™s appearance means spring is close and all the hope and glory of spring after the deadness of winter.

    Iā€™m always thrilled to see flamingoes all dressed up in pink feathers. Yesterday several bluebirds were flying in our neighborhood. Both are favorites.

    I am an unabashed bird lover it will be hard pressed to choose my favorite. But I was in Zion National Park as a fledgling California condor chick took its first flight of the morning. I caught it on videotape as it soared through the canyon. It was one of the most exhilarating experiences in nature Iā€™ve ever experienced.

    My favourite UK bird is the robin – so cheerful, so frinedly. But I was really excited, when visiting friends in Indiana, to see cardinals! now those are birds that sing out Christmas!

    Dear Jane lovely work, beautiful designs! I live in a very rural part of Northwest Vermont; we have so many birds but our Ravens have become my favorite. We have a “Suspicion” or Raven family living on our property. They are so social and greet me almost every time I leave the house. I’ve come to understand why the Raven is so revered in many indigenous societies and myths.

    My favorite bird is the Hummingbird, it reminds me of my sister and best friend Rita. We lost her in 2020. I feed the Hummingbirds all Summer long. The buzz of their wings brings back sweet memories of herā¤

    I like the blue version of seed steelers! My favorite bird is a hummingbird. I enjoy watching them when I head up to the mountains. They are so busy, there were a couple of days when we had to fill the feeder more than once!

    I love cardinals. Our local university has a cardinal as its mascot. It always amazes me that the males are bright red while the females are a dull red brown.

    I live in the middle of the United States. My favorite bird is the Little House Wren. They are tiny and so bossy. Eat lots of bugs

    My favorite bird is a collared dove. We saw them at our feeders for the first time last year and they a back this year. We really enjoy watching them and they are a light grey rather than the browns of the mourning dove.

    Hi there! I live in Oklahoma and the state bird here is the Scissor Tail Fly Catcher. Itā€™s a pretty cool name, I think especially to anyone who quilts or sews. Itā€™s due to the two very long tail feathers that look like a pair of scissors. Itā€™s my current favorite, my other favorite bird is the Missouri Blue Bird – the color is just stunning! Love the Seed Stealer pattern too very clever! Thanks for the opportunity.

    šŸ§šŸ§šŸ§When I was in grade school I entered a coloring contest and won – it was of a Red Winged Oriole.Just off my patio, husband set up a bright red bird feeder for me that looks like a Barn.hundreds of little sparrows come, a few cardinals but Iā€™ve not seen any others.

    I love any bird that comes to my yard. They entertain the kitty through the glass and enjoy my garden. Your Seed Stealers pattern reminded me of a children’s book, “The Harvest Birds”. It’s a story of respect and hard work. Thank you for the chance to win some fabric!

    I loved the idea of using the fabric to make your little birds, they are so cute. I am in love with this fabric, got the two panels as soon as I saw it. I’ve got a ‘French door’ and would like to make two small quilts to cover using them.

    My favorite songbird is the Cardinal. They’re so bright and they live here in Ohio, USA in the winter (It’s also the state bird…duh!). They make such a bright spot in a bleak landscape.

    I live in the foothills of California, and we have turkeys! I love watching the mommas and babies pecking in the yard, the Toms prancing with their tail feathers displayed. They can fly and they roost in tall trees. I love watching the babies grow up.

    My favorite bird? I like so many of them, it is difficult to decide. I guess I would choose the gamble quail. I love the little top notch and of coarse the babies are the cutest things as they follow mom.

    I love to watch hummingbirds. WI think there is 2 mamas because they fly off in different directions! I am excited to see if they bring their young to visit when they fledge out!

    My favorite bird For NOW is the northeastern Bluebird, because we had a pair build a nest in our birdhouse on the tree outside our kitchen window. We had learned about bluebirds in our local wild bird pet food store in the past few years, so it was exciting to see the pair choose our setting which suited very few of the habitat preferences we had learned about! Very fun to watch the Daddy bluebird defend his little family from the larger birds who came to feed at the suet feeder which was directly under their little home. Fascinating! We did not get to see the little ones fledge! We miss them!

    Your seed stealers bird pattern really appeals to me. My ugliest bird favorite is the turkey vulture, my vocal favorite is the raven, but my all time favorite is the hummingbird. I find them fascinating.

    I love your quilt “The seed stealers”. I will be looking for the pattern. It is beautiful with Pet’s fabrics. I don’t think I could ever say enough about how thankful I am for all the work you and Pat put into the Splendid Sampler quilt along and the book. I learned so much from it. Thank you.!!! Now my favorite bird. It is the robin. Growing up in northeast Ohio, the snowbelt area, we all were so excited to see the first robin
    It meant that winter was almost over!!!!!!!!!!.

    I love bird watching and I think my favorite bird is the Gambel’s quail. In the spring they are so beautiful with their top feather bobbing as they lead their brood in a line through the bushes. The babies are adorable following their parents.

    I love the seed stealer quilt. The seed stealers at my house are the squirrels that hang upside down to eat all the seeds out of the bird feeder. We must constantly chase them away. My favorite bird is the family of cardinals that have taken up residence in our yard this year and must contend with the overweight squirrels. Have you ever noticed a cardinal’s beak? They are an amazing orange color – makes me want to incorporate that color in a quilt.

    I love your bird quilt! It is very hard to pick just one bird as a favorite. During the summer, I love to watch the goldfinches, but during the long , white winter, I just love it when the red cardinals arrive

    I have feeders on my deck that is just outside my great room for the hummingbirds. They bring me great joy when I watch them flitter and zoom about!

    I love the your bird quilt design. I can’t wait until it is released. My favorite wild bird is the Cardinal. Who doesn’t love the beauty of the cardinal. My favorite pet bird is the Cockatiel. My daughter had a couple of birds when growing up. A love bird which was pretty but not very lovable. Her Cockatiel Ziggy was the best bird.

    My favourite bird is the red-winged blackbird. A distinctive trill, flashes of red and yellow as they fly by and a sure sign of spring as they migrate back to the north.

    Seed Stealers, what a great name! I especially love the blue. My favorite bird is a blue jay. As I child, I spent a lot of time with my grandfather and his wife. Every morning I would wake to the sound of the blue jays singing. The flood of memories is delightful! Thanks for participating in this tour.

    My favourite native bird is either a Rosella or the Rainbow Lorikeet; they’re just so bright and talkative!
    My favourite non native is probably the hummingbird because they’re so dainty, or as a nod to childhood – Big Bird – hahaha!
    The Seed Stealers pattern is gorgeous – can’t wait for the release!

    Hello Jane, I love birds too. My favorite bird, North American Indigo Bunting. They are very elusive, so if you see one, it is a real joy. The males have indigo iridescent blue feathers. Just lovely.

    We live in a neighborhood on small private lake. We have lots of different kinds of birds from the majestic eagles to the Great Blue Heron to the tiny little wrens and finches with everything in between. We apparently live in the migratory path of many birds as well so we see random species that are not native to the area, passing through at various times during the year. So to pick one would be super hard for me, but I love the markings of the Baltimore Orioles, the black and orange colors just jump out of the trees as they perch up as high as possible once or twice a day and look around for their favorite sweet treat of grape jelly that might be offered. I used to put jelly out every day until I caught the squirrel eating up the jelly by the fist-fulls. Now only occasionally. Thank you for sharing your designs using Patā€™s new Bird Song fabric line. I love the name, Seed Stealersā€¦..so appropriate! So pretty! And Double-Crossed is super cool using both pink and blue colors all together. Not sure which way to goā€¦..might just have to make them all! Thanks for being part of the giveaway. I would love to have that layer cakeā€¦..

    I love all birds. I love to watch them “do their thing.” I love to listen to them. It instantly calms me down to sit on the back porch and hear their songs. But, I think if I had to pick a favorite it would be the little hummingbird. It’s tenacity and strength at such a little size and it’s ability to move all around, backwards and forwards at high speed, just entrances me. We have feeders and enjoy sitting and watching them “fight” over the feeder. So brave and strong and athletic. With their cheerful little chirps as they zoom around and their buzzing sound as they flap their wings at high speed, they are fun to watch!

    I love birds in general but my favourite bird is the chickadee. A delight, whether they are the black-capped or boreal locally, in every season. Some will come to your hand to take seeds which is such a joy! I love your bird quilts! Thanks for your contribution to the tour, Jane.

    I would have to say that a cardinal is my favorite bird since here in Texas we see them quite a bit and they really are a beautiful red color. In the Midwest they had the most beautiful fat Robins with a distinct red breast.

    My high school mascot was the Bluejay. Our school fight song incorporated it. Iā€™m singing the song in my head right now. So, Iā€™d say Bluejays are certainly my favorite bird.

    I adore most birds, especially the ones with bright colors. To choose a favorite, I’d say the red cardinal. They have a variety of songs and always seem to appear just when I need a boost.

    I think your patterns are cute. I like the little birds a lot. My favorite bird however is not a pretty, little delicate thing. I am rather fond of the California Condor, a very large vulture, with a huge wing span that enables it to glide gracefully on air thermals.

    I am an owl lover and I collect owls as well. Have a lot of owl patterns to be made into quilts, and hope to get those started or finished soon

    I think my favorite bird would have to be an Osprey. They are beautiful to watch, especially when they are fishing. They return to the same nest each year and add to it when they return. The strength and grace in such a large bird makes them all the more interesting.

    Love your Seed Stealers! Right now, I think my favorite bird is a Peacock. DH and I visited the Zoo recently where they allow them to roam freely around the grounds. I think it was mating season because we were in an area where this male would plume his feathers every time a female bird came close to him, LOL! It is certainly something phenomenal to see up close!

    I love the birds in the fabric! We have several clutches of baby doves outside our kitchen window each year, the nests are rather flimsy, but the dove parents do a good job raising their babies in them.

    When I visit my family in Traralgon, Victoria, I like to watch all the birds: blue fairy-wrens, galahs, noisy cockatoos, and I’ve even seen the rainbow lorikeets in Tasmania. They are so different from our Canadian blue jays, cardinals, robins, chickadees. All beautiful.

    Hello Jane, My favorite bird is the Mourning Dove. Each year new ones come to a nest they built and lay 2 eggs and hatch then. There life span is so short and sad but last year we had 8 babies and enjoy watching them grow and take their first flights. Thank you so much for sharing pattern with us.

    Love your Seed Stealers quilt, Jane. The window next to our computer is on the second floor and right next to two trees. It gives a wonderful view of lots of feathered friends, including hummingbirds, sparrows, doves, crows, starlings, and an occasional hawk. Don’t really have a favorite but the hummingbirds are so cute and colorful, they are a joy to watch.

    I love the Lorikeets quilt! We have a lot of drama at our birdfeeders too. The bluejays and mockingbirds are the worst of the bullies, and occasionally we will get a sharp-shinned hawk swooping in to surprise the little birds. My favorites are the juncos, which we also call snowbirds. They let us know when winter has truly arrived and when they are finally gone, we know spring is ready to spring.

I live in Tucson, Arizona, USA, and it is a flight zone for almost 500 different bird species. My favorite birds are hummingbirds.     Chickadees are my favorite bird followed by gold finch, downy and hairy woodpwckers and cardinals. Can you tell like birds?

    Hard question as I teach about birds. My current favorite is a Brown Thrasher. My husband and sister-in-law call them raptors. They mimic but not as well as a Mockingbird. Feathers are browns and creams with some spots. Not too common in my area which make them even more special.

    The cardinal of course, living in Illinois itā€™s our state bird. And living close to st Louis the cardinal baseball team. When feeders are out there is a large amount of cardinals that come to the feeders

    I love blue birds. I also have blue birds pictures, glass blue birds, Fenton painted blue bird, my grandmother’s vintage blue bird plate, meat plate, and a blue bird vintage print. No bird bird fabric though.

    I love the idea of the birds in the quilt. I think my favorite bird has to be the Kookaburra, I love when they start up a chorus and all the different notes that they make.

    I like both of the patterns, probably double crossed would be my pick. As for my bird choice that’s
    kind of hard. The humming bird first I love to watch them. We have two that comes back faithful
    every year. Second would be cardinal and then titmouse, dove, robin They are all beautiful.

    My favorite bird is the eagle. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the cam from Pittsburgh Hayes from hatching eggs to fledging. Simply amazing to watch.

    That is a beautiful pattern! I have several favorite birds, to my surprise. First: chickens, which fall into the “pet” category in our family. Next: barn swallows, which bring us delight as they return to raise their babies every year in our barn and then perform amazing aerial acrobatics at night. Lastly, doves, which used to nest in my hanging flower pots when I lived in Southern California. Watching them teach their babies to fly from the edge of those pots was amazing.

    The cardinal is my favorite bird and we have several nesting pairs. They remind me of those who have passed and bring a smile to my face. Did you all know that the male picks a seed and feeds it to his mate? It is so sweet to watch them do this.

    I am a fan of cardinals! We have several in our backyard and I like to think they are visits from my grandmothers, mom and sister who are no longer with us but send a little message from heaven.

    Here in Colorado we have a mid-sized yellow breasted bird whose favorite meal is the “miller moths” we have in May and June. I am so happy to have them gobble up those pesky millers. Neat fabric! Kathy in Colo

    I love a cardinal. The males are so vibrant and the female very muted. I have seen more cardinals this year that ever before. Unsure why they may be the case. We feed the birds that are often joined by cute squirrels that are so entertaining!

    The hummingbird is my favorite bird. Such tiny busy birds. I watch for their arrival in the spring & have my feeders out for those traveling further North.to stop by on their way. Those that stay keep me busy making new solution for them every few days & cleaning the feeders. But I just love listening to them twitter & flying over to see what I’m doing in the garden.

    My favorite bird is the cardinal. My mom loved to see the cardinals and I think of her every time I see them. She loved how they would mate for life. She would watch them at my birdfeeder and marvel at how carefully the male bird would feed the female bird when she was too heavy with baby birds to eat at the feeder. She would also laugh that when she walked by the window they would be startled and fly away but when I walked by the window they would just look and continue to eat the bird seeds. She said they know who feeds them! šŸ™‚

    I have lots of favorite birds. I even feed my leftover bread to the big birds. But I guess my favorite is the yellow goldfinch because they will eat the sunflower seeds out of the big sunflower. It’s wonderful to watch them.

    I would have to say my favorite bird is the Eastern Bluebird. I have fed and somewhat tamed the bluebirds around my house. Used to throw up live mealworms for them and they would catch them in midflight…I currently have 4 bluebird boxes and they all have had hatched babies this year. šŸ’™

    I love the seed stealer design and the double crossed is so interesting. My favorite bird is probably the cardinal but there are so many interesting species. The Piliated woodpecker is a really unusual one here too. And I have a collection of ceramic and wood and fabric birds mostly chickens but others mixed in.

    Here in the upper Great Plains of Dakota territory, the meadowlarkā€™s song is a most welcome announcement of the arrival of spring, Unfortunately, our April blizzards of 2022 dealt a fatal blow to many of the early arrivals. They are a heavy-bodied, ground-dwelling bird so many got drifted under the snow as they hunkered against haystacks and buildings for shelter.

    I grew up in New Mexico and the funniest bird to watch there is the Road Runner. Later in High School my boyfriend (now husband) drove a Plymouth Roadrunner!

    I love nuthatches. I love that nasal “ank” sound and the way they creep down trees. I also love bushtits, who always seem to travel in packs of tiny twittering multitudes.
