{Big} City Girl QAL – Sydney

It’s my turn to make a block for the {Big} City Girl QAL. Though I live in Brisbane now, I was a Sydney girl for 26 years and the iconic harbour bridge and opera house was the backdrop to many a day out in the big city.
The Sydney Harbour block has a simple pieced background, appliquéd opera house and machine stitched harbour bridge.
Step 1
Select fabrics for the water, stonework and sails of the opera house. I used some black and white prints with lots of movement to echo the shell patterns on the sails of the structure.
Step 2
  • 1 – 3 1/2″ x 15″ strip for the water.
  • 1 – 3 1/2″ x 15″ strip for the stonework.
  • 1 – 6 1/2″ x 15″ strip for the sky.
Sew together.

Step 3
  • Trace the opera house pieces on the dull side of fusible web. Appliqué Templates 1 and 2. (Do not scale or Fit to Page when printing).
  • Cut out 1/8″ from pencil line.
  • Fuse to back of selected fabric.
  • Cut out on line.

Step 4
  • Arrange pieces using Diagram A as a guide. Peel off backing paper.
Digram A
  • When happy with placement, fuse to background.
  • Using a matching thread and small stitch, sew 1/8″ inside edge of appliqué pieces.

At this stage the block can be finished if you do not want to add the bridge behind.
Step 5 (Optional)
  • Draw a simple line drawing of the bridge behind the opera house applique using an erasable pen.
  • Stitch over the lines using a light grey thread.

Step 6
  • Trim block to 12 1/2″ x 15″
