The long and the short of it
I try to hang all my rulers and templates on 3M hooks but some of my longer templates don’t have holes for hooks and they are too long to fit in draws. So, to keep them from being broken or scratched, I place them in hanging pouches.
They are simple draw string pouches made to accommodate the different types of oversized templates.
Each bag has a little hand drawn label pinned to the outside, illustrating the contents.
This is another template pouch I am working on. I hope to make all sorts of shapes from circles to hexagons.

For my rulers my hubby made a ruler holder. A pieece of wood with grooves in them just wide enough for the ruler to stand up in them. They work a treat and are kept on my cutting bench within easy reach.

oh my gosh Jane, what fabulous ideas – the 3M hooks and the drawstring bags!! I lean all my rulers up against the wall and keep thinking I must hang them up – but I never even thought of using 3M hooks. And drawstring bags for the hole-less templates is a great idea. I've got my AMH feather templates carefully lined up together in a drawer, but really should put them together in a bag. Adding that to my list of makes! Catherine x

I love seeing how people organise their sewing rooms. It's a great idea to hang your rulers, and the ruler bags are so pretty, and a great way use favourite fabrics.

Thank you for the ideas. I keep my rulers and cutting mats in the same hook and every time the one I need is last one, at the bottom, of course. I have to make some changes.

I like the idea of the bags – especially for the odd shaped one – I also drilled holes in my hole-less rulers – as long as you use a bluntish drill bit and a slow speed you should be OK. I have a large pegboard in my room so I just put the hooks where I need them for each shape.

The bags you've made are a great idea. The first thing I thought of when seeing them was how you knew what was inside each one and wondered is you used a vinyl 'fabric' and then made the bottom of the bag out of faux leather for stability so the corners didn't poke out would work so you could see inside. But, then I saw you made those adorable hand drawn labels so you know what each bag has inside without having to look through each one. Great idea.
I am fortunate that I have a large steel table which was made back in the 50's/60's when office desks were made from steel and had those awesome formica tops on them that were indestructable and the desks match the desks. I was lucky to find a desk when I moved into my house back in 1994 but two years ago I was really lucky and found two of the tables that actually matched my desk. The one I use as a cutting table has a huge drawer underneath that is about 40 inches wide and goes back probably about 25 inches. All my rulers and templates have a nice little home inside that drawer. But, I've run out of room now in that drawer and your ideas might be the thing that will help me store the extras. Thank you for showing us.

Wow Jane what a great idea. I have been looking for ways to store my rulers & templates in an organised manner for a while now. Will definitely be making some drawstring bags (love the labels) & using the 3M hooks. Thanks for sharing. Sallyann
